The laboratory of Dr. Martin Vinck at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI) for Neuroscience in Cooperation with Max Planck Society is seeking multiple candidates for Ph.D. positions to be filled in Spring/Early Summer 2019.
Projects are on unsupervised pattern detection, population coding, and travelling waves, and include (in development with student):
1) Development of novel analysis methods for high-dimensional neuronal datasets (spikes and EEG), in particular methods to detect recurring temporal patterns in an unsupervised way using machine learning techniques. This work builds further on our recent PCB_paper.
These techniques will be applied to neural data to study 1) neural coding, in particular to compare temporal with rate coding, and 2) replay of neural activity during sleep.
2) Development of algorithms and open-source platform for efficient analysis of high-dimensional neural datasets on high-performance computing clusters and GPUs. The focus is on the extraction of network correlation measures in high-dimensional datasets, or real-time analysis with the development of closed-loop feedback optogenetics stimulation.
PhD students will work together with experimental neuroscientists in our laboratory and apply methods and models on experimental datasets from primate and rodent animal models. Experiments in the laboratory include multi-areal electrophysiology with sillicon probes together with optogenetics. It is also possible for PhD students to gain training in electrophysiology and optogenetics.
We are primarily looking for students with training in a quantitative discipline (physics, electrical or biomedical engineering, computer science, mathematics, etc.), or neuroscientists with additional quantitative training. Some experience with neuroscience, or a proven interest in neuroscience, is a pre, but not a must.
Frankfurt is a vibrant city with many prestigious neuroscience institutes in the neighbourhood, and hosts many international students and employees.
